What is IPL Auction?

Auctions take place in anticipation of the upcoming IPL tournament season where it decides the fates of Indian and foreign players who are playing in the tournament. IPL teams interested in a particular player will bid for them. If the player has a good track record and multiple teams are interested in including them in their team, then multiple teams will bid. The team that makes the highest bid will acquire the player.

How Does the Auction Work (Rules and Process)?

IPL auction has raised the team purse by Rs 5 crore from the previous year, amounting to Rs 100 crore. The amount of money each franchise has on auction day will be determined by the worth of the players they release. Furthermore, any unspent funds from 2023 will be carried over.

Currently, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have the highest purse at Rs 12.20 crore (USD 1.47 million), while Mumbai Indians have the lowest at Rs 0.05 crore (USD 0.006 million). Sunrisers Hyderabad’s prize is 6.55 crore (USD 0.79 million), whereas Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans both have Rs 4.45 crore (around USD 0.54 million) in their possession.

Primarily there are 3 types of players in any IPL team:

  • Capped Indian players who have represented the country’s senior team in any format at least once.
  • Uncapped Indian Players who are in the first-class circuit but have never represented India.
  • Foreign or Overseas Players (Non-Indian Players), can be capped or uncapped. However, an IPL team can only hold a maximum of eight foreign players, with only four being allowed to field at one time.

What is Right-To-Match (RTM) in IPL?

Right-To-Match card is basically an option for the current franchise owner of a player to match the price of the players sold during an auction in order to control the player price at the same. During the auction process, the Right to Match (RTM) rule is applicable to players who are being bid for. If a team wishes to keep a player in their squad and can match the highest bid amount, they can apply the RTM rule to show their willingness to match the required amount and secure the player’s retention in the team.
